SA242 Penallta Road Bridge Strengthening

Caerphilly County Borough Council

Caerphilly County Borough Council in the United Kingdom is inviting bids for “SA242 Penallta Road Bridge Strengthening”. Bids close on 30 October 2026, 14:00 GMT; the estimated value is £600,000.

The work

Caerphilly County Borough Council (CCBC) is seeking to appoint an external suitably qualified and experienced Principal Contractor to undertake works to Penallta Road Bridge, Penallta Road, Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed, Caerphilly County Borough, Wales, CF82 7GN. CCBC’s Engineering Projects Group (EPG) is the client for this project and will oversee the works. The proposed strengthening solution comprises the construction of a reinforced concrete box structure designed to provide long-term support to the existing asset. Any voids between the existing structure and the new reinforced concrete box will be infilled with foam concrete to ensure full load transfer and structural continuity. Permanent formwork will be utilised, consisting of blockwork construction with blue pennant stone cladding to all exposed faces, mechanically tied at both end elevations to provide a durable and aesthetically sympathetic finish. It should be noted that the existing superstructure will remain in situ. However, the introduction of the reinforced concrete box and associated infill will fundamentally alter the structural arrangement and load-bearing behaviour of the asset when compared with its current configuration.
